Terry is a successful author and contributor to international educational design publications and works directly with learners, schools and communities to promote an empowered approach to transformational change in the design of environments for learning. He is the co-editor with Murray Hudson of Planning Learning Spaces: a practical guide for architects, designers and school leaders.
This publication brought together leading educationalists and innovative school architects to pool their experience and expertise in the design of contemporary learning spaces. This collaboration demonstrated the importance of understanding the intended approach to learning and teaching, within the context of the vision and values of a school, before thinking about the physical design of the learning spaces. As a result of the experience of the book the Planning Learning Spaces in Practice Design Framework was established to empower and fully engage all those who will inhabit learning environments to be creators and not just consumers in the process of design.
His professional background comes from extensive leadership experience in schools and community colleges as a Headteacher and Principal. He has worked in both the public and private sectors of education, advising local authorities, national governments, schools and academy trusts in transforming the design of future- focused schools. He was a director of WSP Buildings and Management Solutions, a founding director of Edunova and has been a lead education design advisor on extensive school remodelling and rebuilding projects through BSF to the present day.
His current work reflects and supports the shift towards developing a deeper understanding of the relationship between pedagogy and space .These learning environments must enable effective social ,emotional and educational outcomes for, everyone ,including SEND and all those who care for and support them.
